Continuing up the Rhône – Oh Avignon, We Return!

Oh Avignon, We Return!

Our next stop on the cruise up the Rhône was at Avignon, a walled city so beautifully preserved. 30 years ago, Nicole and I had visited this city for an evening and stayed at the Hôtel Palais des Papes. Our goal was to find the little bedroom window that we stayed in, and we did!

The morning began foggy, giving the palace a great majestic aura about the turrets. We walked through the quiet village streets, stopped at yet another Les Halles Market. This little market was very high end. Nicole bought some French pastries, some she said she was determined to do multiple times while in France, (and she did). There was also a private wine seller booth, so we stopped and purchased a couple of bottles to bring on board the ship for enjoyment.

While walking through the city, next to the Opera house, we decided to stop and have a Pastis 51, (a licorice liquor that we often use for breakfasts at the Inn), and people watch – one of our favorite pastimes. I think we all agreed that we could have spent much more time in the lovely city of Avignon. Dan & Beverly did so. The boat disembarked the dock at 1:00pm, and no one had seen them on board. So I called Dan’s cell and he was surprised we had left. One of the few times in history that “Dan missed the boat.” He and Beverly were still enjoying a croissant and café. To make the best of it, they enjoyed a fabulous journey together to our next stop in Viviers, stopping for dinner on the way and just in time to meet us in the lounge after dinner.

Next, we chose to visit to a French Bakery. Nicole then proceeded to put on an apron and make baguettes. It reminded us of making breadsticks for the tasting room back home all over again. The hot baguette, out of the oven, sure tasted good on the walk home that night and the swans loved the crumbs the next morning.

Our journey continues with…Truffles anyone?
