Les Halles Market & Beautiful Beaujolais

Lyon was most definitely a fabulous city, our first visit and we totally enjoyed it. The quaint streets, the west hillside of the city established from the silk market, the two rivers that split the city in half, and all the restaurants and cuisine that are influenced in a unique Lyonnaise style. Of course, we went to the Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse that is named after Chef Paul Bocuse for sure. A giant size portrait is painted on the building outside the entrance. A very nicely upscale market, everything you might need to prepare a special dinner. The restaurant / bars inside serve up oysters from salty to buttery varieties and Champagne from the Rheims Region.

We also went on a unique tour outside the city, north to the Beaujolais Wine Region. It started with a visit to a prestigious small village atop a hill surrounded by vineyards. As you walk through the arch of the walled city, the streets became more narrow and all the buildings were constructed of the same stone, a gold colored stone. What a beautiful site. As our tour guide, Sebastian, brought us up through the rolling hills of the region toward his century old family winery, Nicole and I thought, “Wow! We could easily live here for sure!”

Arriving at the family château, you could feel the pride everyone had in their home region. Beaujolais wine is referred to by the French as a “girly wine”, not full of body but great fruit flavor. Only the Gamay and the Chardonnay grape varietals are allowed to be grown in this region of France, restricted by the A.O.C. government body regulations. As we all walked into the underground cave beneath the château, we knew we were in for a treat. We did enjoy the Beaujolais Blanc for sure along with the flight tasting of the past decade that ended with a surprise pre-release of this year’s 2015 Beaujolais Nouveau – outstanding! Now the release is never allowed until the third Thursday of November and quite the event worldwide.

The hospitable families of this region are extremely proud of the wine they produce. The wine is meant to share with others and drink casually together over great conversation. This is exactly what we accomplished on this afternoon.

Salute to Sebastian and this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau!!!
